Welcome

Sharalandan Park was established in 2009. As new breeders to the blossoming Central Queensland industry we love to talk about alpacas. Our aim is to breed suris and huacayas for their beautiful natural colours, from white through fawn, to brown, grey and black. The fleece of alpacas has been dedicated as “the fibre of the Gods”, and exhibits both warmth and luxury. With each generation, we hope to improve our herd genetics with selective breeding from top quality stud males.

Although we are still learning, we welcome visitors by appointment to come and see these beautiful and gentle animals, whether it is just to admire, or to purchase animals, or fleece for hand spinning, feel free to contact us!

Our journey so far...Australia Day 2009 brought with it our long awaited “Tree Change” with our family to 22 acres in between Rockhampton and the beautiful Capricorn Coast. Being self-employed for the last 26 years in the refrigeration business has brought its own rewards and difficulties, and the need for a more relaxed lifestyle to complement the existing one was called for.

Alpaca Week 2009 was the catalyst needed to set us on our present journey into the future. We fell in love with these animals at first sight, and had opted to buy our first five within 2 weeks. A trip to collect our investment saw us travelling south of the border in the middle of floods and rain and rising river levels, an enjoyable stay overnight and back home the next day with our girls (and boy).

The learning experience from then to now has been substantial, and we have loved every minute. Along with this of course was the rush to design paddocks, build fences, organize water, and dream about the new shed.

Since then, in what seems like a very short few months we have added to our small foundation herd, learnt how to give needles, trim toenails, help with shearing, have had the birth of our first cria—textbook style, and of course just enjoy the company of alpacas. None of this of course would be possible without the help and support of other alpaca breeders who have become our friends and mentors along the way. Special mention must be made to Kelli and family at Pfeiffer Park Alpacas who helped us evacuate our beloved alpacas and us to their farm in the recent bushfires that surrounded us and the Berserker Ranges in our region in October 2009.

Our breeding plan is now taking shape, we have bought and sold our first wether, are looking forward to the birth of more cria, planning more paddocks etc., so much to do...who said we needed to relax to have a great time!
